We have too much stuff. We don’t have enough stuff.

We don’t have enough furniture to fill The Orchard House’s two living rooms. We have our old Room & Board leather couch downstairs, along with our main TV, media center, and leather club chairs. The upstairs living room will be slightly more formal, but we still want it to remain comfortable and functional.

As you can see in the first photo, the living room is a large open space. Hunter loves the carpet in the house. The Greg Euclide painting “Present Perfect” fits nicely on the wall that divides the kitchen from the living room. My initial plan is to find two matching lounge chairs that will be focal pieces. I want them to be wood (most likely walnut) and visually lightweight, so they can go in front of the windows while not totally blocking the view. I’m also envisioning a mid-century inspired sofa from Room & Board (or similar).

As for the coffee and side tables, I jumped the gun a little bit and grabbed these super cool American of Martinsville tables from FindFurnish. I purchased the coffee table first. I instantly knew it had to be mine when I saw it on their facebook page. I hadn’t seen a table quite like it before with the metal inlayed dingbats at each corner, walnut construction, and skinny round legs. A couple of weeks later, a matching side table popped up and I grabbed it.

I like the idea of mixing vintage and new pieces. When I find the right designer piece, I have no issue with spending the money to get the genuine article. At the same time, furnishing a whole house with DWR style prices isn’t really feasible. Maybe over time. A long time.

Relish these moments during the process of putting together your home.

When we moved into our 1958 MCM house, Chank and I lived with a mostly empty living room for a good four months before we acquired any furniture . It was so fun to imagine what it could be, especially when cruising the Find Furnish pages in the middle of the night.

We took about a year to fully furnish the upstairs living room, piece by piece. As we added each piece we were able to swoon over its design and appreciate what it brought to the room.

We also tolerated a half-assed family room set-up in the basement that entire time with an unsightly painful ’80s pastel sectional Then we hit the annual BluDot warehouse sale in June (usually the first or second weekend). There, we were able to re-do our basement with a big Room & Board sectional, two one-of-a-kind prototype side chairs, and a gorgeous media console — PLUS two new chairs to finish the upstairs living room — for about $1,200. Great deals and nice surprises. And well worth the wait.

The Orchard House is beautiful. Look forward to seeing how the story unfolds.

Awesome! Sounds like you guys did it right by waiting for sales to pop up.

I definitely need to slow my roll on some things while getting situated. It’s tough with a house like this. It begs to be filled with great design. I want to throw anything that I own from ikea out the window. Don’t get me wrong, there are some ikea pieces that are appropriate and work in certain spaces. I just feel like nearly every furniture piece that I have purchased up until now was a temporary fix until I found a great house to furnish with care.

I do have a couple of key bits like an Eames wire table and Molded Plywood Lounge Chair with metal legs that finally have a home. Admittedly, they were sitting in our old finished attic space for a couple of years and I didn’t get to enjoy them. I got both of those for great prices, the table was used and the chair came from from the R&B Outlet. I just have to keep telling myself that this house is looking for long-term solutions, and to take care while working on them.
